The modernist approach to architecture, interior design and art found throughout the home is based on the Bauhaus school in Germany that combined architecture, fine arts, crafts and design. The Bauhaus was founded by architect Walter Gropius and existed in three German cities: Weimar 1919-1925, Dessau 1925-1932 and Berlin 1932-1933. The school was run by three different architect-directors, Walter Gropius 1919-1927, Hannes Meyer 1927-1930 and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe 1930-1933, before being closed by the Nazi regime. Famous Bauhaus teachers included Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, and Marcel Breuer. Although the school operated for only 14 years, the Bauhaus style became one of the most influential currents in modernist architecture and modern design of the 20th Century. The Bauhaus had a profound influence upon subsequent developments in art, architecture, graphic design, interior design, industrial design and typography that is still felt worldwide today. |
